Selon un communiqué de presse, Grace n’avait pas prévu de sortir un album solo cette année. En fait, après être rentré d'une tournée en mars, Against Me! étaient censés aller en studio pour travailler sur des chansons. Grace faisait du brainstorming depuis un certain temps. Puis la pandémie a frappé.
«Je suis resté assis pendant un mois et demi dans une maison juste sous le choc en me disant: 'Qu'est-ce qui s'est passé et qu'est-ce qui se passe dans le monde?' Alors que j'ai commencé à prendre mes repères, je suis juste venu à la prise de conscience que l'attente allait tuer le disque et tuer les chansons », a expliqué Grace.
«J'ai passé deux ans à travailler sur toutes ces chansons, et l’idée de les jeter ne me convenait pas», a poursuivi Grace, qui joue également le rôle de Devouring Mothers. L'icône du punk rock a choisi de travailler. Reste en vie a été enregistré au cours de quelques jours en juillet dernier au studio Electrical Audio de Steve Albini à Chicago. Fruit de cette époque étrange et sans précédent, le titre de l’album fonctionne à plusieurs niveaux. Dans un sens littéral, Grace voulait aider à élever l'industrie de la musique en difficulté.
«En sortant les chansons, cela met le label au travail, qui met un photographe au travail, qui met un graphiste au travail, qui met une entreprise de merch au travail, qui la fait vivre», a remarqué Grace. «Vous entendez chaque jour aux nouvelles des gens qui perdent leur emploi et tout s'effondre, et je veux lutter contre cela. Le seul moyen pour moi de lutter contre cela est de travailler.
Bien sûr, le titre implorant de l'album sert également de rappel essentiel à Grace.
