Dirty Projector Répartition de leur projet complet de 5EPs par piste

Dans notre fonction Track by Track, les artistes donnent des détails privilégiés sur chaque piste de leur dernière version. Aujourd'hui, Dirty Projectors fouille dans leur nouveau 5EPs cycle.

Dirty Projectors ont aujourd'hui terminé leur année 5EPs série avec la sortie de la dernière tranche, Route de contournement. Non seulement la collection complète est disponible en streaming ci-dessous via Apple Music et Spotify, mais le groupe a décomposé tout le projet Track by Track.

Les 20 chansons sur le 5EPs l'anthologie était, comme son nom l'indique, à l'origine répartie sur cinq publications distinctes arrivant tout au long de l'année. Chacun des quatre premiers a présenté un membre différent du groupe prenant la tête et présentant un style musical différent, tandis que le dernier est un effort conjoint. Celui qui a chanté sur les EP individuels a co-écrit les chansons aux côtés du chef du groupe Dave Longstreth, qui a également produit, mixé et enregistré l'ensemble du projet.

Mars Windows ouvert centrée sur la guitariste Maia Friedman chantant du folk existentiel, Felicia Douglass s'est engagée pour la future soul de June's Tour de vol, Longstreth a pris un tour de bossa nova en septembre Super Joãoet d'octobre Crise de la Terre présenté des arrangements orchestraux glitchy sous la voix de Kristin Slipp. Le tour final du cycle, Route de contournement, trouve l'intégralité de Dirty Projectors se rassemblant en un seul, chaque membre prenant ses propres couplets et se superposant pour des harmonies en plusieurs parties.

C'est ce vers quoi tout le projet s'est construit, les différents talents mis en évidence au cours des neuf derniers mois se réunissant comme les Avengers. Ci-dessous, écoutez le voyage sonore complet de 5EPs, suivi de la répartition complète Track by Track du groupe.

Le coffret en édition limitée 5EPs est épuisé, mais le vinyle et les CD sont disponibles via la boutique en ligne du groupe, tandis que les détaillants indépendants ont un LP clair.

5EPs suit l'intégralité de 2018 de Dirty Projectors Lampe allumée en prose, que le groupe nous a également fait parcourir piste par piste.

«Sur la brise»:
J'ai écrit cette mélodie la dernière fois que j'étais en Australie. Je suis arrivé à l'hôtel après le long vol de Los Angeles et, même si j'étais mort de fatigue, j'avais l'impression qu'il y avait une mélodie dans la chambre. J'adore la façon dont cet enregistrement est sorti – il se passe si peu de choses! – Dave Longstreth

"On the Breeze" est l'un de mes favoris sur Windows ouvert. Cela me rappelle que certaines chansons sont meilleures sans autant de cloches et de sifflets. Je me perds dans les paroles apaisantes et Maia les chante si bien. – Felicia Douglass

"Suzerain":
Pour ce qui est du sculpteur et de la dalle, je suppose qu'une mélodie est la dalle et la chanson est la forme qu'il faut libérer? Cela semble en arrière, mais pour moi, c’est souvent ainsi. – DL

Quand nous parlions du son de la batterie, nous avons écouté de vieux morceaux de Dolly Parton et George Jones. Les batteries sont si joliment égalées sur certains d’entre eux. Ils sont si fins et soyeux mais ont quand même un peu de punch. Parfois, ils ne frappent même pas la caisse claire, mais frappent simplement le charleston sur deux et quatre. Nous avons également parlé de Kenny Buttrey et de son style improvisé. – Mike Johnson

«Rechercher la vie»:
J'ai remarqué que je parle de chercher dans tant de mes chansons, depuis quinze ans maintenant. J'ai donc fait imprimer cette phrase sur un chapeau et je porte le chapeau tout le temps. J'aime ça: la recherche comme mode de vie. – DL

Oliver Hill a arrangé les cordes de cette chanson et il a fait un si beau travail. Pendant que je rédigeais les paroles de «Search For Life» avec Dave, j'avais une image qui me revenait sans cesse d'un grand arbre solitaire au sommet d'une colline. L'arbre était immobile, regardant le monde changer autour de lui. Bien que le contenu lyrique ait changé à travers de nombreux brouillons, cette image reste ferme dans mon esprit. – Maia Friedman

«Garder le bébé»:
Quand Maia et moi étions ensemble en studio, j'avais une pile de sept ou huit idées que je lui ai jouées, et les quatre chansons sur Windows ouvert sont les idées qu'elle a creusées. Je n’aurais jamais choisi celui-ci – mais maintenant c’est l’un de mes préférés. Merci Maia! – DL

C'est mon préféré sur le Windows ouvert EP – les paroles ont la résonance la plus personnelle pour moi. J'adore la façon dont la voix est si douce et silencieuse, mais les mots et l'histoire ont une dureté mordante. Si vous n’écoutez pas attentivement, vous ne remarquerez peut-être même pas l’obscurité. J'aime ça. J'ai tellement appris sur la création de paroles en écrivant avec Dave. Et j'ai découvert mon amour pour RhymeZone. – MF

Felicia aime deux prises et vous avez terminé – je ne l’ai jamais entendue chanter quelque chose et que ce ne soit pas parfait mais aussi… ainsi elle. – DL

Mes yeux sont rivés sur Mike lorsque nous interprétons cette chanson en direct. La percussion est si belle et complexe – d'une manière ou d'une autre, Mike parvient à jouer avec une telle facilité et précision, en adaptant parfaitement les rythmes. J'aime aussi la façon dont la partie de guitare que je joue s'entrecroise avec la voix de Felicia; c’est très satisfaisant et invite à un sentiment d’intimité entre nous. Je ne suis pas sûr que Felicia sache cela de mon expérience! – MF

«Perdez votre amour»:
«Lose Your Love» était une joie de faire partie de. J'ai été attiré à la première écoute. J'ai beaucoup de respect pour l'écriture de Dave, donc c'était excitant de se concerter sur une chanson pop. Cela remet également en question ma gamme et je pense que faire ce saut dans le refrain convient à la nature passionnée de la chanson. C’est extrêmement amusant de jouer en direct. J'ai grandi en écoutant des artistes plus grands que nature tels que Chaka Khan et Aretha Franklin et j'adore l'idée d'essayer de mobiliser ce type d'énergie dans la performance. Je regarde beaucoup d'anciens clips en direct sur YouTube: funk, disco et soul. Ils ont rendu les choses faciles! – FD

«Auto-conception»:
Quel est votre amour mais un design sûr? J'aime ça. qu'est-ce que vous ne faites que vous-même? J'aime ça. Dans cette chanson, les mots «soi» et «sûr» sont les mêmes. – DL

«Navire vide»:
Quand j'étais adolescent, j'ai trouvé ce livre intitulé Tombes de Sipán sur une grande nécropole précolombienne au nord du Pérou. Le trésor d'artefacts, de céramiques, de textiles et de bijoux qu'ils ont trouvés a permis de mieux comprendre la civilisation Moche qui a prospéré dans la région avant les Incas. Un site secondaire a été découvert plus récemment, avec des personnes enterrées debout dans de grandes urnes en céramique. Je suis peut-être en train d'inventer cela, mais je pense avoir lu qu'ils faisaient tous face à l'est.

L'image d'être enterré debout, face à l'est vers le lever du soleil pour toute l'éternité m'a collé et a inspiré les paroles de cette chanson: «Nous ne sommes qu'un autre vase vide, rempli de chaleur, forgé dans un creuset d'espoir. – DL

Super João

«Maquereau sacré»:
Les paroles du refrain ont été écrites par ma femme Teresa – selon les traditions familiales, ce furent ses tout premiers mots. Elle a vu un hippopotame émerger de l'eau du zoo à l'âge de dix mois et a crié: «Ho macko!

J'ai écrit cette mélodie, avec «I Get Carried Away» et «Moon If Ever», dans un vieil hôtel de Kauai. Je pense que nous regardions Hawaï bleu à la télé. – DL

Je pense que c'est mon album préféré de l'EP de Dave, Super João. J'adore les paroles – un grand reflet de l'humour et de la sensibilité de Dave. À un moment donné, Dave parlait de réenregistrer les voix et je l'ai supplié de ne pas le faire. Il y a quelque chose de si doux, vulnérable et sincère dans la performance originale qui s'est terminée sur la piste. C'est parfait. – MF

«Je me laisse emporter»:
Il y a un an ou deux, alors que nous pouvions encore aller à la musique live, j'ai vu Jonathan Richman à The Kitchen à New York. Spectacle incroyable, en grande partie juste lui sur une acoustique en nylon, pas d'amplification. Il était João Gilberto à l'inverse: Si João est la passion profonde et calme, Jonathan se sentait comme la manie rhapsodique enveloppant le calme intérieur.

Une chose est que j'aurais aimé ne pas avoir mis de retard sur tout le mixage de cette chanson. Ce sera mieux vivre! – DL

“You Create Yourself”:
I played an early version of this one at a show at a VFW hall in Portland, OR in 2013 where I got shocked by a live microphone so many times that I forgot how to play the song for six years! – DL

“Moon If Ever”:
My friend Kyle Field, Little Wings, is an amazing songwriter, poet, watercolorist. He lives in a canyon above the city, and going to see him is like visiting the Oracle at Delphi. Apparently there was a stone inscription above the entry to Delphi that said, “KNOW YOURSELF.” Which is a Drake song. Sharing lyrics with Kyle is the same: You see things reflected back differently than you knew. I love to share stuff I’m working on with Kyle, and sometimes he takes it and runs with it, creating something better, both deeper and lighter, than I could imagine. “Moon If Ever” is one of those times. – DL

Earth Crisis

“Eyes on the Road”:
When I went into the booth to record this, I imagined I was floating down a Venetian canal in a gondola. It helped to capture the very flowing melodic phrasing over the string loop. – Kristin Slipp

OMG! I remember Kristin sent me a gif of a Venetian gondolier from the booth and we were cracking up about this melody. This song is on a serious Bel Canto vibe, the parallel thirds and the big yawning leap. The lyric “I serenade the losers” hits me different every time. The image in my head was the Mother Earth, almost like a Gaia statue of liberty, calling out to the downtrodden, singing to all creatures under heaven, because we’re all losers. – DL

“There I Said It”:
The sparse combination of elements on “There I Said It” on the Earth Crisis EP is infectious and I wish it were longer. Kristin is a powerful vocalist and she has an incredible amount of control over vocal runs which is evident here. Though it’s the shortest it’s one I keep coming back to. – FD

To me, “There I Said It” is the “single” of the EP. After I recorded this song, it was suck in my head for weeks. Specifically, Dave’s demo version was stuck in my head. He’d pitched up his vocals (and possibly also sped them up?). That informed my performance when I went to record it, and I think that’s audible in the final version. – KS

“Bird’s Eye”:
This one is made out of an arrangement I wrote for “Spray paint (The Walls)” from Rise Above. This EP started to take on an ecological theme when I began hearing that string quartet part like a damaged version of the springtime theme from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. To me, of all the EPs, Earth Crisis is the one that points the way forward. Now I’m writing an opera or orchestral tone poem that takes it further, kind of like a rewrite of Mahler’s “Das Lied on der Erde” — a song of the Earth in crisis. – DL

“Now I Know”:
This has some of my favorite lyrics on the Earth Crisis EP: “Realize baby is a healer, she grasped wisdom and yielded, she has a long road.” I’ve spent some time recently thinking about the deep wisdom babies hold in their tiny bodies. It’s like they know nothing, and everything, in the best way. – KS

Kristin sings this song so beautifully, with such tenderness and vulnerability. I want to wrap her up in my arms with love and comfort. – MF

Ring Road

“Searching Spirit”:
Another searching song! This is one that’s been around from the Swing Lo Magellan era. I loved the guitar part, but couldn’t finish the song, because I didn’t know how the lyrics went, and I didn’t know what key it should be in. The drums on this recording are Brian McOmber, and he sounds incredible! – DL

“Porque No”:
To me this is a total Muppets song, so fun to play. I feel like a cartoon in a cartoon rock band! – DL

That was a fun opportunity to blast a little. I guess the song is about indulgence. Also an homage to some of the drum feels of ’50s rock. Dave shouts out the show Billions in the lyrics and fun fact: Asia-Kate Dillon was once my manager at a coffee shop. – MJ

“No Studying”:
Probably the fastest shaker part I’ve ever played. It’s a sort of motoric floor tom beat which is fun to play. A feel that I guess people haven’t messed with too much for a little while. Generally just a pretty fun jammer. – MJ

“My Possession”:
I love the sounds in this song, I love the composition itself, and its message. “It’s time to throw it away” feels like an important line. I also love the tom-my snare sound. Dave used a similar sound in his song “Keep Your Name”… It was the first thing about that song I noticed. – KS

This is the most recent song of the entire anthology. The possession in question is ego. I possess a sense of self — a husk of opinions and facts, memories and experiences — that I confuse for my actual being. My projection! The irony of the song is how my ego actually possesses me: defining, limiting, controlling how I experience life on Earth. It’s a thumbnail I mistake for the actual document, a blowup that only diminishes. The coda lyrics is all imagery from L'Exorciste, but the way Felicia sings it you’d never really know!! – DL
