Sad13, the solo moniker for Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, has announced a new mixtape, 1331, the first project by the artist since 2020. She also previewed the collection by releasing the first three songs. Stream the trio of new tracks below.
The album is due out July 10th on Exploding In Sound Records. Dupuis started writing songs for 1331 during a “mini nervous breakdown” in spring 2024, according to a press release. It served as a way of decoupling from the stressful process of promoting Speed Ortiz’s 2023 record Rabbit Rabbit, an album dealing with childhood trauma. A bike crash, shattered elbow, and recovery derailed the process of making 1331, but the time dealing with the injury gave Dupuis more musical perspective.
“My body didn’t have the juice [to record],” she revealed in a statement. “But tracking in little bursts over more time gave me broader influences.” The result is an entirely Sad13-created collection of songs, each about a minute in length, that promises “whimsical fun amid noisy fury” in “delightfully weird music.” Fans can pre-order 1331 here.
In advance of the mixtape, Sad13 has released a trio of songs: the guitar-laden composition “I Am Now Completely Invisible,” the Björk-influenced “Art Institute,” and the industrial “Watermelon Manicure.” The latter track was made in response to the fear-mongering and media framing around Gaza solidarity encampments. The song mixes samples of mechanical sounds, disconcerting vocal snippets, and digital instruments into a disorienting yet cohesive brew.
Dupuis’ previous release as Sad13 was 2020’s Haunted Paintings. Check out Consequence’s exclusive Track by Track breakdown of the album with the artist.
