Produced by Oscar Scheller, “point blank” describes the emotional weight of a partner who takes advantage of one’s love as a bottomless resource. On the bridge, however, Kelela insists on only engaging in the physical aspects of their relationship. ”
“I’m taking what I want, babe/ But you can’t stay, don’t start,” Kelela declares. “Ooh, you got that stroke, babe/ Yeah, I’m gonna have to see this out, out/ Keep it to the body, babe.”
“I first outline the baseline dynamic, which is that we’re expected to endure men’s inability to self-regulate,” Kelela explains in a statement. “The fantasy many of us are invested in is one where we do such a good job of holding space that it starts to rub off on our partner over time, eventually inducing some sort of revelation and building their emotional maturity. Yet the more we pour into men, the more entitled they become.”
“point blank” follows earlier new avatar singles “idea 1” and “linknb.” new avatar is out July 10th via Warp Records, and can be pre-ordered here.
